When I first heard about this movie, I thought it sounded stupid. All that was going through my head was “A movie about a guy falling in love with his computer?!” I then looked at the director, Spike Jonze. I’m a fan of his work, Adaptation being my favorite of his. I looked at the cast and was impressed. The first trailer got me hooked. I was ready to see this movie. I then found out that the film got a very limited release until January. Living in Ohio, we never get limited releases. I think the closest showing for Inside Llewyn Davis was like 200 miles away from my house. I can get to Pittsburg in less time. So, I had to wait until today to see the film after college. Well folks, it was well worth the wait.
Her is the story of Theodore, a lonely love letter writer in the near future. He’s been a distant person ever since him and his wife spilt up. He decides to get an OS, who’s named Samantha, who he quickly bonds with. He starts talking to her and actually befriends her. They start to bond throughout the first few weeks. After a bad date, Theodore finds out he has feelings for Samantha. From there, the movie explores his relationship with Samantha. It’s an actual relationship, they care for each other, and they fight at some points, and even have sex. Spike Jonze did an excellent job with the script. The movie is so funny while being serious at the same time. There’s a funny jab at video games in the movie. They pretty much say that there’s always a foul mouth person playing with you. This could’ve of easily have a disaster if someone else wrote it. It’s probably hard making a film like this to not sound like a joke.
Joaquin gives one of his best performances of his career. He really shines in this movie. He makes his part his own, I see no one else that could’ve played his character. He was that good. I really hope the Academy doesn’t snub him again. Scarlet Johansson is great as Samantha. She was actually my favorite part of the movie. There are others like Amy Adams and Chris Pratt who shows up now and again in the film. They’re both funny and good. Rooney Mara’s character is mostly only seen in flashbacks. So I really can’t say a lot about her character. Everyone did great and that’s all you need to know.
This is a perfect film for me. I can’t find anything I didn’t love about the movie. I know the Academy is going to snub this film for Best Picture. There’s no way that the Academy will let this movie win Best Picture. It’s probably going to get like three nominations and lose all of them. I’ll go crazy if American Hustle wins Best Screenplay over this at the Globes this weekend.
I said that 12 Years a Slave was my favorite film of 2013. This movie takes that title now. It’s really close, but this movie didn’t make me hate being white. Please go see this film. I have a feeling it’s going to need a lot of help. I was one of the only ones in my theater and I saw this at 4:30. Thank you, Spike Jonze. You made my January movie viewing 1000% times better.
Better Than Sex!!!
