If you forgot, the Sixth Console Generation consisted of the Dreamcast, Playstation 2, Gamecube, and Xbox. Anyway, I re-watched Yahtzee's review of Ryse: Son of Rome at the beginning where he talked about the simplicity and plug & play ability of the gaming consoles during his childhood. www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/8525-Ryse-Son-of-RomeThat got me thinking about my PS2 and my 360. The plug & play ability of my PS2 is without question, plug it in, put a game, and we're off. It seemed like the case at first for my 360, but as the years went on, it started to feel like a gaming PC with the patches, the constant updates, and the infamous DLCs. What do you guys think?

IMO, if its not cartridge, its not plug and play, its plug and watch a load screen then maybe play if you are lucky enough to not get 15 mins of cut scenes...

I'd say it's a fair assessment of things.
One trend that I think is easily overlooked but is now one of the biggest shifts for video game consoles is the user profile. Remember when you first unwrapped a game console... maybe you or your parents plugged it all in... and you popped that disc/cartidge in... and you played the damn game? Yeah, you hit "Start" and maybe "New Save," but that was it.
The present generation is where there is no excuses. That lovely console unwrapping story might resemble something like this now:
Mom & Dad carefully unbox system... Silently setup the console... download patch... wait for-fucking-ever... carefully re-package and wrap the console... setup the console... again... enter screenname, time and place of birth, country of origin, credit card information, social security information, weight, height, eye color, Blue Cross, boxers or briefs, ect... create password you'll forget anyways... create retarded looking Avatar... sign up for online... sign into Netflix... stare at a bunch of ads... menu... play game... "There is a mandatory update for this game"... download game patch... wait for-fucking-ever... still downloading... did you know you can order a pizza?... download complete... Installation successful!... console restarts... 15 minutes of Publisher, Developer, Game Engine intros... START... sign in online... sign in failed... "We apologize for the inconvenience"... "We'll fix that next week"... "in another patch"... No, I don't want to buy a season pass... WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN: "MICROTRANSACTIONS?!??!?"... Console hardlocks, freezes, spits the disc out in shards, or fucking melts.
In other words, a lamp has more plug and play functionality within the first 45 minutes than a console these days.

then maybe play if you are lucky enough to not get 15 mins of cut scenes... This fucking annoys me so much. Plus the fact that they're unskippable.

I can't wait for a time when I buy an old game from the 7th generation of consoles, only to have it be completely broken and unplayable because the servers are down and the day one patches are completely unavailable. Gotta love modern game developers.
