man of steel: late to the party, i know.
points in favor first off: the fights were pretty impressive especially when faoras cool kryptonian martial arts shit got involved, there was some solid visuals at points (supes/zod mind meld scene, the liquid metal picture book sequence in the fortress of solitude was pretty cool if offensively redundant), even if it didnt pay off like it should have snyder was a solid choice for director, and the one scene where cavill actually got to act like superman he was decent.
thats pretty much all i can honestly say in its favor. i dont want to retread what palps said earlier too much, but this movie is constantly drifting back and forth between "obnoxiously missing the point of superman " and "a vomitous insult to everything superman as a character represents." a movie about the anthropomorphic representation of the ideal of hope and self-betterment should not look like a fucking STALKER game. half the time this movie feels like a thesis on a character that isnt in it. every line out of jor-els mouth is some hog-wash about superman being an ideal and how he'll rise up and lead us to a better future and all that but all we're ever presented with is a mopey, spiteful sadsack whos only big moment of heroics are watching his dad kill himself and snapping a dudes neck. what a hero. all this wrapped up in an impenetrably offensive cloak of grossly inappropriate, veering on fetishistic disaster imagery in a movie thats ostensibly about the super friends.
lois lane (who enters this movie with a line about measuring dicks, just in case you forgot that this is written by the same dude that made blade trinity and ghost rider 2) was completely superfluous. like, she had no reason to be in this movie AT ALL because this isnt even really a movie about the daily planet or anything else to do with superman except some wierd h.r. giger world they keep calling krypton. the rest of the supporting cast is equally as unimpactful.
speaking of, david goyer is at the top of his game as ever. i shit you not, there is a scene late into the movie where general zod is like three inches away from looking directly into the camera and he just starts explaining his character arc. art.
i give this movie 9 out of 11 horribly inappropriate correlaries to real life tragedies.
