One of the longest running threads on Spill reborn anew.
Even if many of it's posts will be lost forever, we can continue the discussion here.

Think it was "Argo" for the 2nd time.
It was really well made and a solid film. 8.5/10
Last movie in a Cinema was Gravity. Amazing and suprisingly fast-paced. 9/10

Watched a couple movies recently, and they all sucked.
First up was Beginners, an oscar winner from a couple years back with Plummer and McGreggor. It was way too amused with itself, the lead character was a fucking lump, and above all it was boring.
Then I thought I could maybe entertain myself with a Polanski flick and opted for one I hadn't seen---his oft-reviled Pirates. Well, there's a reason for that. The production values are nice, but the film's so stunted. The performances are awful and his sly, absurd humor wasn't there at all. His worst film.
Then for some dumb reason I decided to go with another poorly regarded film from a master with Antonioni's Mystery of Oberwald. It starts off with a pretty good first act, but then it just becomes a slog. Antonioni's eye was wonky on this one, but he was past his prime. Also the guy's worst film I've seen.

Caught two Korean flicks on, uh, Netflix: A Company Man and A New World back-to-back:
A Company Man: Fun action movie even though it is a bit silly at parts, but overall, very enjoyable to watch.
A New World: Unnecessarily long and with characters and story you don't give a shit about, spouting needlessly coarse dialogue. The movie was complete shit with the exception of the elevator sequence. There's always one saving grace in these things.

American Hustle - Terrific soundtrack and great performances however it did need some cutting for a more tighter pace.

M.D. Geist. T'was alright, was expecting a bit more, kinda lackluster.
However, the soundtrack gets 5 brutalizing exo-suits out of 5.

The Hobbit - 3.5/5
+ Middle Earth is as beautifully realised as ever + New characters are generally good and the new subplots have potential
- More action doesn't make a better film. In this case the action scenes are too frantic and FX driven to fully enjoy and too many fight scenes are focused on the elf characters which leaves the dwarves with little to do - No closure/resolution to any of the plot threads introduced - Lacks the heartfelt moments and humour of the first instalment
Will probably feel differently once all three films are finished and can be watched as a trilogy.

Turbo
I tend to rate the movies aimed for kids based on both how much I had to endure and how much the kids enjoyed it. The movie was kinda fun, it was pretty generic but still fun and the kids loved it. Not as much as it's main competition despicable me but no one can beat those minions. I give it a high matinée.

Looper - Remains a blast for me. Full Price!
New World (2013) - Got the blu for it yesterday and while it didn't stay up to snuff as one of the best movies of the year, I still really enjoyed it. High Matinee!
12 Years A Slave - It is a bit hard to watch at points, but it is the best movie I've seen this year. Ironically enough, I'm only gonna give it a Rental, if only for the fact that I think it'd be much easier for someone to digest at home than after walking out of a theater.

Lord of the Rings: Episode 2 The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
If they cut out about 30 minutes of completely superfluous bullshit (starting with Tauriel and the completely unneeded love triangle), they really could have finished the story and it shows. Its also glaring that this story wasn't originally meant to have anything to do with LOTR and the insistence on bridging the gap kind of derails the movie at times. Smaug is really cool, though, and the barrel sequence was exciting.
High Rental!
